"During World War I, Britain pledged to its French, Jewish, and Sharīfian allies, to share with them the territories of the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East. The Sharīfs were promised only the pure Arab areas that were not in the sphere of French interests. France was promised the areas that were under French influence, and the Jews were promised assistance in the restoration of the national home of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel, where the Jewish state would be established in the future. Over the years, myths have flourished around the subject of the promise due to the lack of historical documents that were published only in a later period. Among the myths refuted in the book: there are contradictions in the British commitments to the Jews, the Sharīfs, and the French; the promise to the Sharīfs was a binding agreement; the Arabs as a whole fought the Turks alongside the British; the Balfour Declaration was an initiative of Britain alone; the Balfour Declaration was not binding in nature; the national home was not intended to extend to the entire Land of Israel, and the national home was not intended to become a Jewish state in the future. Historical documents in the Arab and British archives have helped to dispel these and other myths. The author's extensive research reveals the full picture: the Sharīfian side understood that the Land of Israel was not included in the promise and never saw it as purely Arab territory; Sharīf Hussein declared that he did not desire it; Balfour announced that he was not authorized to issue his own declaration on the Land of Israel without the consent of Britain's allies."-- Translation of back cover.
