Summary:
This study is conceived by its authors as a journey into the remote period when Mexican archaeology was taking its first steps, as well as a tour through deserted cities that amazed early explorers. It covers the Bourbon excavations in southern Italy and their repercussions in New Spain and Guatemala; the first excavations at Xochicalco, El Cerrito, El Tajín, Cantona, and Teotihuacan; and offers a glimpse into archaeological collecting in New Spain and the Mexican National Museum. The text is complemented by illustrations-some in color-and photographs.
The enormous relevance of archaeology in Mexico is due to a long and vigorous tradition that has its roots in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Since then, the journey of this discipline has been rich in places, characters, relationships and events that, in one way or another, have an impact on our present and on the particular way in which it is approached today. In this book, archaeologists Eduardo Matos Moctezuma and Leonardo López Luján invite us to take a fascinating journey to that remote period in which Mexican archaeology was taking its initial steps, as well as to visit deserted cities that dazzled the first explorers, and to identify circles of antique dealers and collectors who found in their gatherings a great pleasure in explaining past times.
