Summary:
"Fueling Development is a timely analysis of how working-class mobilization generated long-run economic and social development in Trinidad and Tobago. Zophia Edwards brings the Black Radical Tradition front and center in development sociology to explain post-independence success in oil-rich Trinidad and Tobago, countering narratives about "resource-cursed" nations. Edwards identifies a distinct strain of trade unionism that flourished prior to independence and continued to make claims on the postcolonial state, which she calls "liberation unionism." This distinct form of working-class mobilization, one that is multiracial, anti-imperialist, and connects labor issues to broader social transformation, was able to force an independent Trinidad and Tobago to channel its oil money toward increased capacity to serve movement and public goals. By considering Trinidad and Tobago in contrast to other former British resource colonies, including Nigeria, Zambia, and Guyana, Edwards demonstrates the central role worker movements play in institutionalizing states with greater capacity for redistributive and democratic development. Fueling Development contributes to studies of development, race, labor, and political economy by uncovering the centrality of liberation unionism to robust democratic and redistributive development in the Global South"-- Provided by publisher.
