- Summary:
- "Since the publication of the first edition of this book, emotion-focused therapy (EFT) has continued its rapid development, with many important theoretical, practical and organizational developments over the past 20 years. These include a large increase in quantitative outcome research and systematic qualitative research on EFT; a new, integrated formulation of the central process of emotional deepening and transformation, plus clearer formulations of the nature and functions of specific emotions. It presents a deeper, more differentiated understanding of client process, including a reorganized list of client in-session micromarkers and the five-aspect client process framework. There is new and widespread interest in client case formulation. The book presents new therapeutic tasks; and applications with new client populations, with the most recent development being clarification of the transdiagnostic nature of EFT. It explores increasing interest in sociocultural issues and core values of fairness, equal rights and valuing differences between and within people, and welcoming to all (justice, equity, diversity and inclusion), including cultural humility and emotional injuries from experiences of being marginalized or excluded. The book discusses frequently asked questions about topics such as online therapy, the two EFTs, and therapies related to EFT (EFT-adjacent therapies). There is a massive increase in EFT training throughout the world, accompanied by exciting new developments in training and supervision (e.g., deliberate practice, competency frameworks for EFT practice and supervision). In EFT, therapists cultivate a deeply empathic, caring presence and offer therapeutic work that follows the client's lead while providing gentle, flexible guidance of their process." -- Preface.
