Summary:
"Negative Originals is a study of race and photography in Medellín, Colombia in at the turn of the nineteenth century. Juanita Solano Roa considers how the history of the negative and its manipulation is bound up in factors of race, class, gender, and sexuality.By employing the concept of the photographic negative as a theoretical tool, Solano Roa illuminates the profound contradictions in the construction of identity discourse during a critical period in Colombian history. The book delves into the intricate relationship between race and photography, focusing on how regional and national discourses linked theories of race to progress. By examining the works of Fotografía Rodríguez (Horacio Marino and Melitón Rodríguez) and Benjamín de la Calle, Solano Roa traces the visual construction and dissemination of racial ideologies within the Department of Antioquia and highlights the resistance to these narratives through the same medium. Through an insightful analysis of both negative and positive prints, Negative Originals uncovers the juxtaposition between traditional portraiture, which reinforced prevailing racial ideologies, and subversive depictions of often excluded individuals including cross-dressers, peasants, black individuals, and the poor"-- Provided by publisher.
