Summary:

Erwartung (translation: Expectation) is a one-act opera, a monologue for solo soprano, with atonal music by Arnold Schoenberg composed in 1909 to a libretto by Marie Frischauf, née Pappenheim. In a forest, a woman "enters in search of her lover. She is full of apprehension at the solitude and the darkness that confronts her. A scene change finds her groping her way through the darkest part of the wood, starting with terror at every unaccustomed sound and, where a clearing opens up in the next scene, at every movement in the shadows. In the fourth scene she emerges in a state of exhaustion into more open countryside, her dress torn, her hair dishevelled, and her face and hands scratched. In the distance a shuttered house is visible where, apparently, her lover may have been visiting another woman. She stumbles against something which proves to be his murdered and still bleeding body. From here on the action is purely psychological. After disbelief has given way to horrified certainty her reaction passes through three main phases: an initial outburst of love and grief, paroxysms of jealousy and rage, and finally contemplation of an empty future ending in a dream-like resumption of her search"--Grove Opera Online.
