- Summary:
- When Sam Schillace, Steve Newman, and Claudia Carpenter built Writely--their browser-based word processor--they saw a future that most of us didn't yet appreciate. Now, 20 years on, it's easy to forget how revolutionary a product it was: No more sending around docs with confusing, ever-lengthening titles. No more software to download. No more "save" button. Just you, your teammates (or friends or family), and a blank page. Of course, Writely was acquired by Google and became the basis for Google Docs; the rest was history. It's one of the great successes of the Web 2.0 era. Sam, Steve, and Claudia will be joining me for this episode of Live with Tim O'Reilly to look back on how it all came about (and perhaps talk about how their thinking on collaboration has changed in the past two decades). But we'll also peer into the future--one that may be filled with AI agents acting on our and others' behalf. As a corporate vice president and deputy CTO at Microsoft, Sam has plenty to say about building AI products. And as AI is embedded throughout the enterprise, it seems to me that AI observability will be essential to ensuring that all of our systems are behaving the way we want them to, something Steve has some experience with. Steve's also the cofounder and president of the Golden Gate Institute for AI, bringing together experts to think through some of the toughest questions AI poses. I'd also like to tap into Claudia's deep expertise with frontend design, wielded most recently as a cofounder of Scalyr, to get her take on developing effective UX for AI. Whether you come for the history or for the insights on how to create the future you see, it's sure to be a thought-provoking conversation.
