- Summary:
- A 14-page press packet from the NO On the Briggs Initiative Committee contains information about admittedly false statements being spread that link homosexuals with child sexual abuse, some of it originating from the Los Angeles Police Department. The press release says that the figures were manufactured, but are being used by state Sen. John Briggs, the sponsor of California Proposition 6, to promote his measure to bar gays from working in public schools. <p/> The package contains supporting documents, including: a letter from NOBIC to state officials, asking that they do their part in refuting the claims; pamphlets from groups disseminating the false information; letters from LAPD Chief Darryl Gates, admitting the information was false, blaming two particular officers for promoting it, and apologizing for its use; and a letter from Secretary of State March Fong Eu, apologizing for using the information in a speech.
