Summary:
This document is the final environmental impact statement for the Haines Amendment to the Ring of Fire management plan. It addresses future management practices of 326,397 acres of BLM-managed lands in an area known as the Haines Block (also called Haines planning area). That planning area encompasses a total of 951,018 acres in Southeast Alaska bounded by the Canadian border to the north and west, Glacier Bay National Park to the southwest, and the Tongass National Forest to the south and east. In March 2008 the Anchorage Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management released "Ring of Fire record of decision and approved resource management plan," which directs management of BLM lands within the Ring of Fire planning area (covering much of southern Alaska). However, a decision on designating an Area of Critical Environmental Concern in the Haines Block was deferred. Subsequently, changes had been made to Special Recreation Management Area designation criteria, and significant land conveyance has occurred in the planning area. These concerns necessitate an amendment/supplemental environmental impact statement for the BLM lands within the Haines Block.
