As a result of a fire at the Metropolitan Detention Center Brooklyn on Sunday January 27, 2019, a partial power outage at the West Building lasted a full week, until Sunday, February 3, 2019. The outage affected lighting in housing areas, computers, phones, and other institution systems and equipment. On February 7, 2019, the Office of the Inspector General initiated a review and inspection of the Detention Center to determine whether the Bureau of Prisons took appropriate steps to address issues caused by the fire and power outage. Specifically, the issues of conditions of confinement, and whether the Bureau of Prisons had adequate contingency plans in place to respond to such an incident. -- Executive summary.
