Summary:
A determination of the relative merits of various fuels for use in high compression engines is the object of experiments being conducted at the Bureau of Standards for NACA. Inasmuch as the tendency of a fuel to detonate often makes it unsuitable for such use, a consideration of the general subject of detonation has formed the initial step in this investigation. The purpose of this note is not to summarize the available information on the subject but to discuss a phase which seems to have received relatively little attention.
