Summary:
An investigation has been conducted to study the aerodynamic characteristics of an aspect-ration-20 wing having thick airfoil sections and employing boundary-layer control by suction. Data from model tests in both the Langley full-scale tunnel and the Langley low-turbulence pressure tunnels are included. The results indicate the effects of varying suction flow rate, suctioin-slot configurations, wing surface condition, flap deflection, and Mach number.
The results indicate that, through the use of boundary-layer control by suction, trailing-edge separation was controlled and lift-drag ratios as high as 20.8 were attained in the lift-coefficient range from 0.9 to 1.0 for the smooth-wing configuration. Up to a Mach number of 0.44, test results show compressibility effects to be only minor for the lift-coefficient range up to and including 1.0. With full-span trailing-edge flaps installed and maximum suction flow rates applied, maximum lift coefficients of 2.5 and 4.2 were obtained for flaps-neutral and flaps-deflected conditions, respectively.
