- When the gasoline engine with vertical cylinders was essentially the universal type, measurement of clearance volume was a fairly straight forward, though somewhat messy, procedure. With the advent of the V-type engine, the problem ceased to be simple and a different method measuring the clearance volume needed to be developed.
