Summary:
"This report presents the findings of the First-Time Homebuyer Education and Counseling Demonstration (hereafter, the "demonstration"). The demonstration uses a rigorous experimental design to measure the extent to which broadly offering voluntary, free homebuyer education and counseling services affects outcomes for low-, moderate-, and middle-income prospective first-time homebuyers. The demonstration began enrollment in September 2013 and completed data collection in July 2020. Study participants--a diverse group of prospective homebuyers who approached one of three major national lenders about a mortgage--were randomly assigned into control or treatment groups, with treatment group participants offered free homebuyer education and counseling services. The demonstration seeks to answer the following primary research question: What are the impacts of offering homebuyer education and counseling on low-, moderate-, and middleincome prospective first-time homebuyers? It answers this question by estimating the overall impact of offering voluntary, free homebuyer education and counseling services on outcomes across three outcome domains."--Executive summary.
