Physical Description:
1 online resource (viii, 72 pages) : color illustrations, color maps.
Other Title:
At head of title: Quality of our nation's waters
Place of Publication:
Reston, Virginia : U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, 2014.
Summary:
Major Findings: 1) Few contaminants were detected at concentrations greater than human-health benchmarks 2) Groundwater is a source of phosphorus to streams in the lower Mississippi River watershed 3) Nitrate concentrations in shallow groundwater were low despite widespread fertilizer use 4) Groundwater is most vulnerable to contamination where groundwater residence times are short 5) Vulnerability of deep aquifers may increase in areas of high-volume pumping.
Contents:
Overview of major findings and implications
NAWQA approach to assessing groundwater quality
Environmental and hydrogeologic setting
Natural processes and human activities that affect groundwater quality
Quality of the groundwater resource used for drinking water
Understanding where and why key contaminants occur in shallow groundwater
Understanding where and why key contaminants occur in deep groundwater used for public and domestic supply.
