- Emergencies can happen at any time and often without warning. While emergency personnel do their best to quickly respond to emergencies, it could take time for them to arrive on the scene. The best way to help citizens be safer during an emergency is to help them prepare before one occurs. Children comprise approximately 25 percent of our population and are the future of our communities. They can play an important role during emergencies, but many programs do not consider children in their planning. It is important that children know what to do in an emergency and that all disaster planning, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts include children's unique needs and assets. Establishing a youth preparedness program in your community is an involved effort, but there are many resources available that can help your organization implement one.
