Summary:
This online publication provides access to both the full and concise versions of the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data. The "full" bibliographic format contains detailed descriptions of every data element, along with examples, input conventions, and history sections. The "concise" bibliographic format contains abridged descriptions of every data element, along with examples. The full and concise versions are identified in the header of each field description.
Notes:
"Prepared by the Network Development and MARC Standards Office, Library of Congress, in cooperation with Standards, Library and Archives Canada (previously National Library of Canada) and Bibliographic Standards and Systems, British Library"--Introd., Oct. 2006.
Supersedes USMARC format for bibliographic data. 1994 ed., with updates no. 1 - 3, Mar. 1995-July 1997; and: Canadian MARC communication format for bibliographic data, and its 6 updates published between 1994 and 1998.
Online versions of both the full and concise MARC formats were made available in 2008, when it was determined by the Library of Congress that the online versions would be the version of record, and the print a byproduct produced after the online version. The Network Development and MARC Standards Office ceased producing the full format in print in 2011--MARC listserv, 6/1/2011.
Update no.1 (October 2000) through update no. 33 (November 2021); title from home page caption (Library of Congress website, viewed Apr. 28, 2022).
Other Format:
Print version, 199-2011: MARC 21 format for bibliographic data.
