- Summary:
- A net-zero energy building (NZEB) is a residential or commercial building with greatly reduced energy needs through efficiency gains such that the balance of energy needs can be supplied with renewable technologies. Past work has developed a common NZEB definition system to better the understanding of what "zero energy" means. Four well-documented definitions--net-zero site energy, net-zero source energy, net-zero energy costs, and net-zero energy emissions--were developed. Each NZEB definition has merits as a zero energy design goal, with pluses and minuses for each. In this paper, we propose a classification system for NZEBs based on the renewable energy sources used by a building. In addition, we look at how this classification is applied to the previously developed NZEB definitions
