- Summary:
- Senate Report No. 110-77, which accompanied the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (Pub. L. No. 110-181), directed GAO to review DOD's plans for the development of language and cultural awareness capabilities and to report to the congressional defense committees by December 31, 2008. Our objectives were to assess the extent to which DOD has 1. Developed plans to address language and cultural awareness capabilities, including funding needs and metrics to evaluate success; 2. Established processes to identify strategic language and cultural awareness capabilities, requirements to carry out its plans, and inventory of existing capabilities; 3. Developed training and education programs to support its plans for developing language and cultural awareness capabilities; and 4. Developed research and acquisition programs to support its plans for developing language and cultural awareness capabilities. This briefing presents our preliminary observations as of November 2008. We plan to complete our work and issue a report at a later date.
