Contains unsigned frontispiece portrait of middle-aged Milton with tissue guard, engraved title page with vignette illustration of poet being inspired by heavenly choirs by F. Borders and title page with vignette of young boy in a nature setting with cane laying beside him signed "WS" in center.
Half-title page (Milton's Poetical Works) printed in red and green with gilt trim; large decorated initial "P" incorporates the figure of a women in the same colors.
Title page and text have a single black line border.
Illustrated plates, mostly by F. Borders, some unsigned: four for Paradise Lost; two for Paradise Regained, one for Samson Agonistes, two for Comus, one for L'Allegro and one for Il Penseroso.
"Murray and Gibb, Edinburgh, Printers to Her Majesty's Stationery Office"--Page 455.
Red leather binding with accents of gilt. Front cover features small gilt oval portrait of Milton against a blue background surrounded by laurel wreath. Spine has seven raised bands with "Milton" stamped in gilt. All edges gilt.

PR3550.E72 1872 Milton Collection copy presented to the Penn Libraries by Joseph A. Wittreich in honor of Stuart Curran, 2019 has engraved title page detached and second plate partially cracked. Description and invoice from ElevenEleven Books is laid in.
