Biography/History:
Lisbon-born Brazilian Jesuit who was opposed to the unequal treatment of cristãos novos (Jews or Muslims who converted to Catholicism and their descendants) and the enslavement of the indigenous peoples of Brazil; after being sent with other Jesuit missionaries in 1661 by Brazilian authorities back to Portugal, he was denounced for heresy and imprisoned by the Inquisition from 1665 to 1667, but a royal pardon enabled him to leave Portugal for Rome by 1669, where a judicial inquiry resulted in papal protection from the Inquisition and his return to Brazil in 1681.
Summary:

Notes:
Title supplied by cataloger.
Collation: Paper, 76; 1¹⁰ 2⁸ 3-5¹⁰ 6⁸ 7-8¹⁰; gatherings signed 5-12, upper left first recto; early foliation in ink, 87-162, upper right rectos.
Layout: Written in 26-37 long lines; wider outer margins formed by folding and used for citations keyed to numbers in the texts; folio format.
Script: Written in cursive script, possibly by a single hand.
Origin: Possibly written in Lisbon, after 1686 (f. 122r; in the response of Mendo de Foyos Pereira, undated here but probably originally written in the 1670s, he is identified as secretary of state, a position that he did not hold until 1686); dates of composition of some of the texts are as early as the 1640s (for example, f. 136r), but the copies in the extant manuscript were probably written close to the same time as the latest text.
