Summary:
The ancient world has yielded around 1500 defixiones or curse tablets, designed to bind an enemy or a rival. To practice this malign ritual, practitioners generally used lead plaques but also other materials such as pottery sherds that were inscribed with a text, magical signs and sometimes with a drawing. This volume brings together drawings engraved on the Graeco-Roman curse tablets in order to shed more light on the material and symbolic aspects of the curse ritual. The main iconographic themes and symbols encountered on the items are classified and discussed. It also includes a corpus of illustrated curse tablets which details their current location, their condition, a general bibliography, 103 drawings, and a brief description of each drawing.
