Summary:

In the year 1903, after the local rabbi imposed a terrible curse on her father, a girl named Gisela set out on a journey from the Hungarian town of Marmures Szeged to Vienna. There she will build her life and experience marriage, birth, divorce and widowhood. Years later, during World War II, she managed to survive and immigrate to Israel, in contrast to many of her family members who remained in Hungary and were sent to the crematoria of Auschwitz. A few years before Gisela's death in 1959, one hot summer day, while sitting on the porch of her house, a stranger named Mark Neumann happens to be in the yard asking for a glass of water. It soon turns out that he is a native of her town. The two sit facing each other on the porch of her house, and Mark serves as Gisela's sympathetic ear as she sheds her memories and peels them shell after shell.
