- Summary:
- "Joseph McGarrity's life has been one of the most neglected areas of Irish history for an individual that was one of the leading Republican figures from 1916 to his death in 1940. His life provides a perfect case study in the development of a political solipsism within militant Irish Republicanism that was to dominate the movement right up to the formation of the Provisional IRA in 1969 and the decades following. What made McGarrity unique compared to other leading militant Irish Republican figures from the time period was the fact that it was in the U.S. that he formed his militant and uncompromising Republican outlook. While figures like John Devoy arrived in the U.S. already hardened revolutionaries from years of political activism and imprisonment McGarrity arrived in the country as a young and politically naïve eighteen- year-old. His political awakening in the aftermath of business success took place within Clan na Gael as opposed to the Fenian movement or IRB. Although McGarrity would live in the shadow of the overarching and dominant presence of John Devoy he would build up a powerful political base in Philadelphia. From Philadelphia McGarrity would eventually challenge the established Clan leadership in New York and after the split of 1920 take over leadership of the movement. During the Irish War of Independence and Civil War that followed McGarrity displayed a consistently militant approach both in the conduct of the war and when it came to political compromise. His relationship with De Valera dominated McGarrity's political outlook and actions from 1916 right up until his death in 1940, long after De Valera abandoned militant Republicanism and commenced down the path of constitutional politics"-- Provided by publisher.
