- Delivered at the antislavery convention in Pittsburgh on August 11-12, 1852, which had been organized by the Free Soil Party in an attempt to unite all antislavery factions in a new Free Democratic Party. Smith and his followers opted for an alternative platform that called for more radical reform under the banner of the "Democratic League.
