- A letter to Thomas Jefferson concerning misconduct by U.S. troops during the War of 1812, and defending British destruction of the Library of Congress as "small retaliation after redress had been refused for burnings and depredations not only of public but private property committed by them in Canada," including the "public buildings at York [now Toronto], the capital of Upper Canada." Signed and dated (p. 411): "John Strachan, D.D. Treasurer of the Loyal and Patriotic Society of Upper Canada. York, 30th January, 1815."
