- From a manuscript signed "P.M." and written, it is believed, by Patrick Mackellar, engineer-in-chief of the expedition. Contributed to the Corps papers by Lieutenant-General G.G. Lewis, by whom it is wrongly attributed to Major James Moncrieff of the engineers, who was not commissioned until 1762. Cf. Dict. of nat. biog., v. 35, p. 130.
- A manuscript, nearly identical, was published in 1872 by W.J. Anderson, who claimed the authorship for James Thompson.
