The notice of its appearance prompted this reply from Catlin: "The pamphlet you speak of as 'printed privately for a very select circle,' is a gross and mangled extract from my account of the Mandan Religious Ceremony, printed and circulated without my permission or knowledge; of which I have demanded the surrender of every copy printed; and for every reprint or circulation of the same I will prosecute."--Cf.
