Summary:
Explore the rich history of Mexico from ancient civilizations through to modern day. Discover how the Aztec and Maya evolved, gain a better understanding of ancient Mexico and discover why America and Mexico were once at "war". In this program we'll learn how the United States has played a key part in defining what Mexico is today. Mexico was the home to many great civilizations including the Olmec, the Maya, the Zapotec and the Aztec. For over 3000 years before the Europeans arrived these civilizations flourished. The Aztec Empire was the last great civilization prior to the arrival of the Spanish. In 1521, Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes conquered the Aztecs and Mexico became a Spanish colony. For 300 years Spain ruled the land until the early 1800s. At that time the local Mexicans revolted against Spanish rule. Father Miguel Hidalgo declared Mexico's independence with his famous cry of "Viva Mexico". In 1821, Mexico defeated the Spanish and gained full independence. Mexico was seeking their independence once again against the French, The Franco-Mexican war with Mexico's Victory on May 5, 1862 is now known as Cinco De Mayo.
