- Summary:
- Gaetano Donizetti may have only lived to be fifty but in that time he composed around seventy operas! La Fille du Régiment was his first French opera and premiered at the Opera Comique, Paris in 1840. We follow the story of the orphaned Marie. Found abandoned on a battlefield and consequently brought up by the régiment. Fun, frolics, pathos and passion, this opera has it all. Set in the Tyrol, in this delightful version by the masterful duo of André Barbe and Renaud Doucet the action is transported to the twentieth century. This is a colorful, joyful production that has an almost childlike, fairytale quality to it. Maria Grazia Schiavo and John Osborn dazzle in the title roles. Don’t miss the aria “Ah mes amis” if you want to see a tenor at the top of his game! The Orchestra of the Fenice Opera directed by Stefano Ranzani adds a sparkling accompaniment to this stellar cast and production. Rachel Rowntree
