Summary:
Described in The Guardian as “a savage, relentless exposure to everything the keyboard can throw at anyone who dares to take it on,” Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is certainly worthy of its intimidating reputation. Alongside Fabio Luisi and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the intrepid Nelson Goerner takes on the concerto in all its devilish complexity. Famed for being one of the most technically challenging yet emotionally evocative pieces in the standard classical piano repertoire, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 showcases Goerner’s remarkable virtuosity through intricate, romantic melodies and ferocious cadenzas. This evening’s concert also features the world premiere of I Wish You Daisies and Roses, for which composer Sophia Jani was inspired by her personal experiences of motherhood, and a mesmerising co-commission by Arlene Sierra that depicts the calls of two birds competing in the wild. Richard Strauss’s Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks is tonight's finale: a colorful, whimsical tone poem depicting a mischievous prankster’s comical escapades in the German countryside.
