Summary:
Ethnography is an established, mainstream method but SAGE doesn't have the bestselling textbook in the field. Nor do we have a book presenting the next 'big' idea. We publish many books on this topic but still lack a definitive teaching guide to challenge the market leading book Ethnography 4e Hammersley and Atkinson (2019). I have looked for a competitor that can meet and beat Routledge's title for several years; Hammersley and Atkinson are stellar names so simply replicating their content is redundant. Instead, we have published an array of more focused titles that chip away at Ethnography 4e by providing specialised engagement with elements of ethnography - e.g. Pink Digital Ethnography or Madden Being Ethnographic. The market is big, and these titles have consistently sold between 500-650 copies. We even have 4 supps from Atkinson that specialise in the narrower threads of ethnographic practice. We don't need another small sliver of the market. The challenge is to find a hook that is big enough to sustain a whole ethnographic module/project, and map the coverage of the competition, but that also offers something new and valuable to the literature. I think that this edited collection could be one way to genuinely challenge Ethnography 4e. whilst significantly contributing to SAGE's pledge to diversify our core methods programme: (a) The editors are young academics who have created a community around their mission to make fieldwork healthier, safer and more ethical. They have a blog that champions diversity within fieldwork and which celebrates best practice whilst calling out the bad; (b) The editors have set up a consultancy firm that works directly with universities to improve training and support for researchers and students doing fieldwork. This book would be a part of that discussion and will be offered at their workshops; (c) The book will map the full ethnographic research process using protected characteristics to highlight the challenges and opportunities of the methods needed at each stage; (d) This includes theoretical perspectives, data analysis techniques and writing up as well as the more commonly discussed methods in the field. It covers the same process as Ethnography 4e but from a fresher POV; (e) Despite ethnographies focus on different cultures and experiences most textbooks (including SAGE's) tend to be written by white men; (f) This book is edited and can includes first hand material on/from academics discussing: gender, sexuality, ableism, mental health, technology (limited access to/poor skills) and the impact of violence; (g) Ethnography has been folded into general qualitative research methods courses (particularly at UG level). A successful ethnography textbook will be more aligned with PG courses where researchers need the type of practical advice included here. That said, reviewers felt they would use the content with their UG students where appropriate; and (h) The topic will travel - these themes are universal. I would expect to see good sales into Scandinavia, Northern Europe and Canada especially. The breadth and depth of the subject matter can be seen in the blog's suggested references https://thenewethnographer.com/references. 750 is a statement of intent. I see it as 600-650 copies to the ethnographic and fieldwork community (including at least 100 to international markets and approx. 50 to be sold via the authors' workshops) but then another 50-100 copies to those interested in DEI within qualitative methodology. Fieldwork is a classic component of research methods, and this book will appeal to PG students and researchers doing work in/teaching skills for the field outside of 'pure' ethnography. There is a dearth of material on this topic, and I think it will be in demand.
