Summary:

This book, resulting from the work of the research group Áfricas: Society, Politics and Culture (Uerj-CNPq), invites us to learn about biographies, life stories and trajectories of characters little addressed in African historiography. It contributes to problematizing not only the great Western narratives but also the very exercise of historical construction. In this sense, it reminds us that the act of narrating Africa by Africans is always crossed by power disputes and intertwined in specific political, social and cultural contexts, which cannot be disregarded. The texts gathered here cover a vast period (from the ancient Kushite civilization in Sudan in the 1st century BCE to 21st century Mozambique) and take us through different regions of Africa, exploring themes such as the role of the feminine, the formation of local elites, racism, resistance, emancipation, construction of heroes and nationalism, among others. The diversity of characters, chosen for their protagonism in different contexts, gives visibility to the many layers of what it means to be African.
