Summary:
Morocco has great linguistic and cultural diversity. However, the society and culture of contemporary Morocco are still largely unknown beyond its borders. Colonization led to a reaffirmation of identity around a language, Arabic, together with its own history and Arab-Islamic civilization. With independence has emerged a national Arabic literature canon which had been forged since the colonial time. The system of genres in contemporary Moroccan literature is similar to other literatures of the world. New narrative manifestations such as the novel and autobiography have been added to poetry, short stories and drama. This work has paid special attention to the formation of the canon of contemporary Moroccan literature, through the developement of the novel and literary criticism.
