- Summary:
- "This third edition summarizes the most relevant and recent research on posttraumatic disturbance as well as new information on traumas or adversities covered less in previous editions. It discusses complex, cumulative, and developmental traumas; parental disattunement and emotional neglect; drug-facilitated sexual assault; sex trafficking; pregnancy loss; COVID-19-related stressors; and exposure to social maltreatment, such as racism, sexism, transphobia, and microaggressions. The chapter also considers psychological syndromes or disorders that have only recently come to light, such as complex posttraumatic stress disorder (complex PTSD), disturbed self-capacities and self-organization, prolonged grief disorder, distress reduction behaviors, and somatic and functional neurological symptom disorders. Also included in this regard are those trauma-related disorders whose symptoms or characteristics were substantially updated in the fifth edition of the DSM (DSM-5) and its text revision (DSM-5-TR), such as PTSD, acute stress disorder, the dissociative disorders, the adjustment disorders, and borderline personality disorder. Most importantly, this edition reviews currently available psychological tests and interviews as they relate to trauma and adversity-both those developed to specifically address posttraumatic effects and those considered more generic that can nevertheless be helpful in evaluating comorbidities and some posttraumatic outcomes. It also discusses previously available generic tests, such as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2, the Personality Assessment Inventory, and the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III. The book describes teleassessment approaches. Although children also experience a variety of difficulties in response to major stressors, this book is limited to adult posttraumatic responses."--Preface.
