Summary:
"Cultural Humility offers a practical approach for meaningfully engaging cultural identities in therapy, to promote connection and growth in work with clients from a variety of backgrounds. Culture is full of rich histories and shared stories that exist within the larger sociopolitical context, influencing the power, privilege, and opportunities we have in everyday life. Although culture is a multifaceted construct that has been challenging to define, some of the foundational aspects of culture are that it (a) emerges in adaptive interactions between groups of people and their environments, (b) consists of shared elements/rituals, and (c) is transmitted across time periods and generations. The authors provide a therapeutic framework that integrates and contextualizes clinical training with the cultural issues and dynamics that arise in therapy. This book focuses on different from that of many texts on multicultural competence, which tend to have a chapter devoted to various types of clients (e.g., one chapter on counseling African American/Black clients, one chapter on counseling LGBTQ+ clients, etc.). Instead of focusing one chapter on various types of cultural backgrounds, the book is organized into two main sections. Part I presents the theoretical foundation of the book, focusing on self-awareness and the importance of developing a strong multicultural orientation that values diversity in all forms. Part II shifts the focuses to the therapy room and explores how cultural humility shows up in the interpersonal interactions between therapist and client."--Preface (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved).
