Summary:
"Foremother Love is a study not only of 18th-century poet Phillis Wheatley, but also the role she has played as a foundational figure for Black feminist criticism. Dana Murphy establishes Wheatley as a critic and collaborator in her own right: a poet who wrote in response to and conversation with other poets, and a critic who was invested in sharing, explaining, critiquing, and responding to her own and others' work and its contexts. Beyond that, Murphy argues that Wheatley is a key figure in the development of the Black feminist depiction of the love of an unrelated feminist ancestor as a legitimate relation for the practice of inheritance, mourning, liberation, and friendship-what she calls "foremother love." Foremother Love focuses on Black feminist criticism from the 1970s to the 1990s, drawing on published and archival work from Barbara Christian, June Jordan, Audre Lorde, Barbara Smith, and others"-- Provided by publisher.
