Summary:
"To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the return of the Oegyujanggak Uigwe to Korea, the National Museum of Korea hosted a special exhibition titled Pinnacle of Propriety: The Uigwe, Records of the State Rites of the Joseon Dynasty from November 1, 2022 to March 19, 2023. The Joseon dynasty Uigwe - a collection of nearly 3,500 extant books, which includes 297 Oegyujanggak Uigwe books - contain the ruling philosophy of Joseon that founded the legitimacy of the dynasty and embraced its people through propriety, as well as stories in which kings, court subjects, and all the nation's citizens were in harmony with one another and within a defined order. In addition, vividly portrayed in all these books is the Joseon kings' demonstration of propriety and care for their people. Furthermore, the determination to record every single detail and to then pass on the precious meanings within the Uigwe to future generations is also well captured. Over the past decade, the National Museum of Korea has meticulously researched the Oegyujanggak Uigwe and offered opportunities for anyone to easily make use of them. The museum has published a series of academic books called the Study of the Oegyujanggak Uigwe, Royal Protocols of the Joseon Dynasty and held symposiums in order to share the fruits of the research on the Uigwe with a broader audience. In academia, research on the Uigwe has flourished, too. The rich and detailed records of the Uigwe played a crucial role in the restoration of court music, crafts for the royal family, and royal clothing. Also, thanks to the information garnered from the Uigwe, research areas related to the architecture and art of Joseon have been developed both in breadth and depth, resulting in quantitative and qualitative growth of both researchers and research achievements."-- Preface
