Summary:
Although women artists captured the West for more than 150 years, most people are only familiar with Georgia O'Keeffe. Brought to the western frontier by their husbands in the wake of the gold rush, women artists rarely had any formal training. Instead, their fascination with the beautiful, rugged country and its people pushed them to create and refine their talents. The women artists in this educational volume include Kathryn Leighton, Malvina Hoffman, Grace May Betts, and the best-known female artist of the West: Georgia O'Keeffe. In this one-on-one tour of fourteen women artists, prompts draw the reader's attention to details that casual viewers may miss. These questions lead to further discussion. Readers gain a better understanding of each artist's life, inspiration, subject matter, and the techniques of looking at art. The introduction explains the forces that brought women to the West and the barriers they faced as artists. Fascinating facts will delight readers with additional information and encourage art lovers of all ages to learn more about the West's women pioneers. -- From dust jacket.
