Discovered by Stevie Wonder and none other than Barack Obama himself, who invited her to his inauguration party in 2009, saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin has since become an accomplished musician. Alternating between solo artist and arranger, Benjamin released Phoenix in 2023, a cathartic album signifying her return to the game after a serious car accident. Co-produced by the excellent Terri Lyne Carrington, this redemptively titled opus features contributions from Georgia Anne Muldrow, Wayne Shorter and the activist Angela Davis, to critical acclaim. In this interview with Qwest TV, Lakecia Benjamin lets us into her rich imagination. Her biggest wish? To play at the top of the Pyramids of Giza. For her, jazz and the language it creates are above all synonymous with freedom; just like the saxophone, an instrument she describes as being closest to the human voice. In each answer, the eloquent African-American composer reveals a genuine open-mindedness, mentioning names as diverse as Sun Ra, Pink and Sly And The Family Stone; a quality that shines through throughout the interview, complementing a particularly endearing personality.
