Summary:
Kenny Garrett is certainly one of the most interesting saxophonists of the day. In performances with Miles Davis during his last period, or alongside drum master Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers, the man has developed a substantial solo discography illustrated by albums such as African Exchange Student, Sketches of MD, Live at The Iridium (with the late Pharoah Sanders) and even the recent and acclaimed Sounds From The Ancestors. Present in quintet form, on the occasion of the Jazz à la Villette festival, the Detroit native offers an excellent summary of his career. The exciting, "Backyard Groove" strikes the spirits with its incredible dynamics and resolutely funky phrasing; taken from Songbook, "Sing a Song of Song" it highlights a feline frame filled with wild Latin percussion; and the up-tempo "Do Your Dance!" reveals a playful stage performance, with gimmicks chanted by Kenny Garrett, and the audience's response matches it. Carried by a powerful band (pianist Vernell Brown Jr's playing is to die for, ditto for the rhythm embodied by Rudy Bird, Samuel Laviso and Corcoran Holt), the American windplayer breathes an organic fiber that is sometimes sorely lacking in certain contemporary jazz productions. The proof can be found in "Wayne's Thang," a swaying tribute to the legendary saxophonist Wayne Shorter and the finally of a highly recommended concert ... Jennifer Schiller.
