Summary:
English soul is synonymous with strong personalities. Just to name a few, one might think of Dusty Springfield with her legendary Memphis sessions, the late Amy Winehouse alongside the sophisticated New York group The Dap-Kings, or Zara McFarlane with her rendition of Junior Murvin's reggae classic "Police and Thieves." Mica Millar, an artist who first garnered attention in 2017 with a series of singles, reinforces the significance of this rich musical tradition. The Manchester-born singer is gifted with a refined vocal timbre, infusing her music with a range of celebrated jazz influences. This particularly elegant production reaches its peak with "Heaven Knows," her critically acclaimed debut LP. In this performance at the renowned Parisian jazz club Le Duc des Lombards, Mica Millar showcases this approach. The radiant artist gets straight into it with "Girl," an up-tempo yet remarkably smooth song, followed by the compelling "Trouble" with its powerful narrative structure, and the bluesy "Down River," which acts as a converging force between the River Thames and the Mississippi. Backed by a tight band (notably keyboardist Ben Smith and backing vocalist Grettel Killing), Millar continues with "My Lover," one of the seminal tracks of her discography, followed by a cover of "People Get Ready," the American civil rights anthem penned by Curtis Mayfield with The Impressions. Highly recommended! Vincent Caffiaux.
