- The United Kingdom has cultivated a thriving jazz scene in recent years. In contrast with the European landscape and its tendency to attach labels, this genre is known for transcending cultural boundaries, drawing similarities to the two-tone movement that combined rock and ska in the late 70s. Following in the footsteps of Shabaka Hutchings and Theon Cross, Zara McFarlane first made her name with a rendition of reggae singer Junior Murvin's "Police & Thieves," a track previously covered by the visionary Joe Strummer and his band The Clash in 1977. Taking the stage at Moods Club, the Anglo-Jamaican musician kicks off her set with the stunning "Peace Begins Within." From her album Arise, released with Gilles Peterson's label Brownswood Recordings, this song showcases McFarlane's captivating voice. Accompanied by a young ensemble with Binker Golding on saxophone, the musician delivers an exceptional performance to the Swiss audience. Jazz compositions blend effortlessly with soul and Caribbean rhythms, encapsulated by a bridge dedicated to West Indian melodies as well as the incredible "Freedom Chain," a track driven by deliberately dub-sounding bass. With this compelling mix, Zara McFarlane carries on the legacy of her renowned predecessors, most notably Abbey Lincoln. That's high praise indeed. Vincent Caffiaux.
