Summary:
Original in its composition, impressive in its lineup and powerful in its interpretation, the 3rd Eye Trio is one of the gems of the 2008 New York JazzMix festival. Here, you'll see Nasheet Waits (drums) and Eric McPherson (drums) heating things up with Abraham Burton (tenor sax), pushing toward African sonorities. The saxophonist unleashes an almost Coltranian energy, while the drummers lay down a constantly moving colorist tapestry beneath him. At the Knitting Factory on Houston Street, Manhattan--before the club relocated to Brooklyn--the trio weaves music of such finesse that the listener is riveted, not wanting to miss a single detail. Unbound by the constraints of harmony, the two drummers are left free to explore a vast range of textures in their accompaniment, in which polyrhythm takes center stage. But in the foreground, they make the nuances of their unconventional playing more accessible and draw attention to the important role of percussion in a group. That this concert happened to be filmed was a stroke of luck for the history of jazz to come, as it is a historical document that brings listeners renewed pleasure at each hearing. At that time, Nasheet Waits had just recently recorded the first album with his quartet Equality, made up of Jason Moran (piano), Logan Richardson (sax) and Tarus Mateen (bass). Like McPherson, he had accompanied Andrew Hill and Fred Hersch and had played with Jason Moran. Like Eric, Abraham Burton had studied with Jackie McLean. Eric, Abraham and Nasheet had rubbed shoulders since childhood by virtue of the fact that their parents were musicians (drummer Freddie Waits) or in music-related fields (Eric's mother was a dancer and choreographer). Back in 1994, Burton had already invited McPherson to be part of his quartet Forbidden Fruits. Rather than important figures in the world of international jazz, the musicians of 3rd Eye seem more like a group of old friends who have come together to create hours of listening pleasure.
