Summary:
Choreographer Mette Ingvartsen puts skating and youth culture in the spotlight in Skatepark, a show that's as fast-paced as it is fluid. In a life-size skatepark reconstituted on stage - designed by scenographer Pierre Jambé - we witness a waltz of skaters and dancers challenging each other, playing together and mastering their discipline in impressive harmony all accompanied by a guitarist and drum loops. Ingvartsen aptly illustrates the spirit of urban skating: regardless of level, age difference, gender or discipline, everyone respects each other, everyone supports each other, everyone pulls together. The competition is positive, and failure encouraged, because that's what learning these sports is all about: falling in order to succeed. This show tells the story of an average day at a skatepark, from morning to night. It moves from figure sessions, singing and dancing, tricks challenges and impromptu basketball games in the daytime, to rebellion by night, when the skatepark becomes a subversive, no-holds-barred party place. Skatepark gives a voice to youth and gives power to their voices, just as it sublimates sports that go beyond mere physical effort to form a genuine counter-culture, united and supportive.
