- Summary:
- On the French jazz scene, Sylvain Rifflet has carved out a special place for himself through a number of albums, thanks to the singularity of his approach. His "live" performances being as relevant as his studio recordings, this concert is unmissable, and he gives it alongside the superbly talented flutist Joce Mienniel, the guitarist Philippe Gordiani and the drummer Benjamin Flament (who has concocted a home-made drum/percussion kit that allows him to deliver woody, almost African sounds), a high-flying quartet despite the lack of a bassist. On a repertoire that borrows from his albums "Mechanics" and "Perpetual Motion, A Celebration Of Moondog" (here, only the composition "2 West 46 St" is from the New York Viking's pen), Sylvain Rifflet illustrates an original dreamlike universe, a world that seems to draw from fantasy comics and science-fiction books that match the mood of his long red coat. It's sometimes confusing, always exciting, and demonstrative of a creativity that brings everyone under the same umbrella. Between loops, jazz improvisations and rock and noise accents, it's a form of contemporary urban romanticism that emerges behind the tumult of textures and ruptures. Occasional moments are reminiscent of the lyricism of Stan Getz, a saxophonist revered by Sylvain Rifflet. **Philippe Lesage**.
