- Summary:
- Réunion Island, a French department in the Indian Ocean, is home to a captivating cultural melting pot. Populated by various African, Indian and European communities, this volcanic island attached to the Mascarenhas Archipelago (Rodrigues, Mauritius) is, by extension, home to diverse musical creation. Maloya, one of the island's major genres, embodies an African culture brimming with cross-cultural encounters such as the servis kabaré, syncretic ceremonies where ancestors' spirits are evoked through music and dance. This genre has long been considered subversive – a character that led maloyers to live in secrecy for a portion of the post-war boom. In the wake of influential artists like Granmoun Lélé and Danyèl Waro, Lindigo represents the new island generation. While inheriting instruments like the roulèr (a large drum played in straddle position) and the kayamb (a flat rattle composed of sugar cane flower stems and seeds), this group also mixes ancestral rhythms with other genres, exemplified by their collaborations with South-African rockers Skip&Die and Parisian accordionist Fixi. Carried by the radiant Olivier Araste, the group kicks off their concert at Moods Club with undeniable force. The percussion is outstanding and blends seamlessly with electronic instruments, and the powerful vocals conjure a trance-like atmosphere. This captivating performance comes to an end with "Domoun," a track from the LP Maloya Power and a true distillation of tropical expertise. Vincent Caffiaux.
