- Summary:
- Between its traditional heritage, varied urban repertoire and soft power assets like J-pop, Japan's music scene is multifaceted. The Minyo Crusaders are a case in point, blending various traditional Japanese influences with a host of vibrant rhythms such as reggae, Latin jazz and cumbia. Sensational from start to finish, their album Echoes of Japan brings together different min'yo songs, a celebrated folk genre attributed to rural, working-class and religious communities. Starting the show from within the audience, the Tokyo-based collective kicks things off with a short procession. Highlights of the performance to follow include "Kushimoto Bushi," an irresistible track punctuated with Latino riffs, and "Otemoyan," a reggae song enhanced by the Stalag riddim dear to Tenor Saw. Punctuated with unique elements that work brilliantly together as a whole (in addition to their remarkable artistic heritage, the Japanese have always lent an attentive ear to Western musical productions), this set by Minyo Crusaders soon divides into distinct and powerful sections. Visibly happy to be there, the musicians exchange readily with their audience and don't skimp on anecdotes. Embodying this rapport, the group presents a local fishermen's song alongside explanations and a live demonstration. A captivating call and response, this vocal structure draws similarities to blues and the current Afro-American scene. Vincent Caffiaux.
