Summary:
The Ornette galaxy is the perfect way to describe how today's musicians revolve around the solar star that was Ornette Coleman. With its rough edges, its haunting rhythms, and its insidious little dancing melodies, Ornette's music continues to fascinate, if only for its strange glee. Just look at the faces of the musicians: they are happy to indulge in a joyful, bloody jazz–a jazz filled with explosions that jostle–a music that grips us while making the head dance. Only in the performances of Gil Evans' big band have we seen players enjoying themselves this much. Fred Maurin, a guitarist in his forties who has been influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Zappa, is naturally more sensitive to Ornette Coleman's albums with Prime Time, a group who mixed free, rock, and funk (the albums Of human Feelings, All Languages, and Tone Dialing for example), than to those of the first decades of his career, such as the album Free Jazz: a collective improvisation which was perceived at the time as a manifesto. Since taking the reins of the Orchestre National de Jazz in 2019, the man who was the founder and leader for fourteen years of Ping Machine, has shaped an intergenerational ensemble with variable geometry, with a large female representation, in order to adapt to the various projects he intends to carry out. Alongside Dracula, a show for children, Dancing In Your Head(s) is the first project of his tenure, and it can be heard as his calling card. He has intelligently entrusted the orchestrations to Fred Pallem. Philippe Lesage.
