Summary:

With his group Gateway, alongside John Abercrombie and Jack Dejohnette (ECM, 2008), English double bassist Dave Holland had already experimented with the little-used trio format of guitar, double bass and drums. Holland has always been sensitive to diverse forms of musical experimentation. Addressing the seasoned audience at Zurich jazz club Moods, he assures them that he will once more, with his fellow musicians Kevin Eubanks and Obed Calvaire, be embarking on a musical exploration. This takes the form of an extended sequence of tracks, spanning approximately an hour and a half. It flows like a tranquil river, marked by an absence of excessive noise or fury yet not without salt or spice--melodies unfold one after the other, each one with its own melodic, harmonic and rhythmic flavor. In this refined chamber music-like setting, pure solos are rare and brief; the performers lean more towards a conversational kind of interaction where repetitions inject life into the performance. The concert kicks off with a long melodious introduction on double bass (what a sound!) that lays the foundations for the musicality to come. The slight swing technique of Obed Calvaire, an American drummer with Haitian origins, combines elegantly with the melodic sensitivity and chordal sequences of the fantastic guitarist Kevin Eubanks. This remarkable concert was concretized in the 2021 album Another Land (Dare2Records). Philippe Lesage.
